It is a break barrel spring piston air pistol. You cock it by pulling the barrel down in the front until it "clicks" and sets the trigger. Then you load a pellet into the breech (back end) of the barrel, and close the barrel. It's now ready to fire. There's no safety. Mine had a clogged transfer port. (The little hole that lets the air in behind the pellet.) Cock it, then take a drill bit a little smaller than the transfer port hole and make sure that passage is clear.
